Our Mission

Cannonsville Lumber Inc. is dedicated to the task of providing its customers with the finest quality forest products from the Catskill region.  A sensible approach to nature while professionally meeting the needs of the market is the hallmark of Cannonsville.

"No tree before it's time", says President Adolf  Schaefer Jr.  "We take only what the forest allows.  The idea of taking everything from the forest belongs to the past.  The natural habitat must be maintained.  Our future depends upon it."

Company Profile

Cannonsville Lumber Inc. is a forest products company  that produces green and kiln dried lumber.  The mill cuts both hardwood and softwood.  Logs are supplied to the mill through the purchase of standing timber in a 100 mile radius from Deposit, New York.   Industrial customers range from furniture and flooring manufacturers to concentration yards and cabinet makers throughout the United States and Canada.  Custom sawing orders in softwood are welcomed.

Cherry, Red Oak, Red Maple and Hard Maple are the predominant species cut.  Smaller quantities of White Pine, Hemlock, Basswood, Ash, and Hickory are sawn throughout the year.

Related Divisions

Specialty Products

Adding value to the raw material products is a constant effort at Cannonsville. The Specialty division was added in 2004 to provide high quality molded products to the wholesale and retail home building market.   Tongue and groove Pine and Maple plank flooring lead the list of new products followed by V-groove paneling, ship lap paneling, and wainscoting.  Lumber straight surfaced on 2 sides or 4 sides is also now offered.

Pallets

The recent installation of pallet manufacturing equipment has established Cannonsville as a top regional pallet producer.  This enhancement now provides the ability to produce over 300 pallets per day.

Forestry Services

Proper forest utilization has been a cornerstone of the Cannonsville success story.  Once a tree is selected for harvesting nothing is wasted.  Whether transformed into lumber, bark mulch or solid chips , nothing in the tree is left behind.  "We lead our peers in this industry," says vice-president Larry Schaefer.  "Only those lumber companies that understand complete utilization will operate into the future.  The taking of only the best trees in the woods, leaving the lower quality timber behind, can only result in a declining forest.  We can't allow that to take place.  Balanced forestry practice requires selective cutting of all grades of timber."  To maintain the quality standards at Cannonsville a staff of forestry experts is on hand to seek out and work with landowners in purchasing their timber.  Related consultation on timber management, wildlife conservation and excavation are part of the forestry services mission.

Trucking Services

Cannonsville Lumber Inc. takes commitments to delivery schedules seriously.  To ensure the timely delivery of lumber products to its industrial customers the Company maintains a fleet of several tractor trailers.

Membership in Organizations

Support for the forest products industry is essential to the overall vitality of the industry.  No single company can afford to stand alone and expect to remain competitive.   Cannonsville is an active member in the following groups.

This consortium of landowners, sawmills, pulp and paper companies and furniture manufacturers promotes public awareness of sound forestry and the benefits that the forest products industry provides to everyone.

Catskill Forest Association

Watershed Forestry Management Program

The Catskill watershed is essential to supplying New York City with good quality water.  New York City owns more land in the Catskills than another other single entity.  The management program encourages private landowners to be good stewards of the forests through assistance with silviculture, sustainable timber production, proper road development and wildlife management.  Good management practices in all these areas will ensure an adequate and safe supply of water for generations.

New York State Timber Producers Association

Northeast Logger Association

The NLA promotes the interests of landowners, timber harvesters and sawmill owners throughout the northeast.  It is based in Old Forge, New York.
